FBI SNARES THREE MORE IN CREDIT CARD SALES RING:

Nov 13, 2006

FBI SNARES THREE MORE IN CREDIT CARD SALES RING: The FBI investigation of an international ring that bought and sold credit card numbers has expanded in Eastern Europe following the arrest of three Romanians students who stole 200,000 euros (US$256,897) through credit cards.
TheFBI recently announced the arrest of four suspects in the United States and 13 in Poland as part of Operation Cardkeeper, Stephen Kodak, FBI's supervisory special agent, told CardLine. The initial arrest appears to have occurred in San Diego in June when the FBI picked up an American known only as "John Dillinger," his online nickname. Kodak says the Bureau has worked since August 2004 with Polish investigators to identify suspects who buy and sell credit card numbers through such Web sites as CcpowerForums, and Darkmarket. The FBI identified the leader of the gang as Mateusz Rymski, known as Blindroot. The FBI says he hacked into third-party Web servers and rented access to those servers to criminals who used them to host phishing pages that collected personal data from unsuspecting consumers. The three arrested Americans are Dana Carlotta Warren of Atlanta, and Zanadu Lyons and Frederick Hale, both of Columbus, Ohio.
Eastern European news outlets reported that the Romanian students were being held by that country's Organized Crime Fighting Department with the help of the FBI. In other ID theft news, Illinois police this month charged 10 owners, managers and employees of seven hotels in Joliet, Ill., with selling credit card numbers of guests.
The arrests were part of Operation Sleep Over that began four months ago and led to the arrest of a man in the racket, who then became an informant for the Will County Sheriff's Department.
