Blue Metropolis Foundation,

In 1996, three Montreal writers and members of the Writers’ Union of Canada (Linda Leith, Ann Charney and Mary Soderstrom) organized a new kind of literary event in partnership with UNEQ (Union des écrivaines et écrivains québecois). This event, called “Write pour écrire” brought writers and readers together to cross language barriers. The event proved to be such a success that people wanted more .
In 1997, Blue Metropolis Foundation was born of this public interest. Established as a non-profit organization whose core purpose is to gather people from different cultures to share the pleasures of reading and writing, Blue Metropolis was created by writers and readers for writers and readers. The Foundation grew thanks to the support of a number of volunteers and friends (among them such notable talents as Jean-Claude Germain, Nicole Brossard and Alberto Manguel). Although the very first financial contribution was not confirmed until December 1998, just four months before our first festival, all levels of Government stepped in to support the project. As a result, the Foundation was able to present the very first Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival in April 1999.
Diverse sources of funding, the support of partner organizations, and the enthusiasm of writers, readers, staff and volunteers have together allowed the Foundation to expand its activities year by year, so that our programmes and activities now include the Blue Metropolis Literary Series, educational programmes for students from primary to Cégep level, and an adult literacy and community writing programme.
Blue Metropolis epitomizes Montreal.
Daring, multilingual, fun, unexpected, truly international-and open to the world.
That's Montreal. And that's Blue Met.
